About our island

This map has been reproduced with permission from the Fetlar Interpretive Centre.
Fetlar is a small island 7 miles long by 5 miles wide. We are served by inter-island ferries which dock at the new terminal in Hamars Ness on the north side of the island. There are at least 5 ferries everyday across Bluemull Sound to Fetlar. There are currently around 60 people living on the island. The school is up at Baela, just above the main settlement of Houbie, which is well known for its interpretive centre. To take a virtual tour of the island, as prepared by the pupils, please click here.
Fetlar is also famous as one of the breeding sites for the Red Necked Phalarope, which is depicted in the school logo. The Loch of Funzie (pronounced Finnie) is the most important breeding ground for this species in the UK. Funzie has a bird hide and the island appeared in the recent BBC 2 programme Springwatch.
